Here are the definitions of the abbreviations you will meet:
SM – a surrogate mother – is a woman who bears a child on behalf of another person or a couple, typically via artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization.
IVF – in vitro fertilization – is a process of fertilisation where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in vitro (“in glass”). IVF is a type of assisted reproductive technology used for infertility treatment and gestational surrogacy.
PGD – preimplantation genetic diagnosis – is the genetic profiling of embryos prior to implantation (as a form of embryo profiling), and sometimes even of oocytes prior to fertilization. PGD is considered in a similar fashion to prenatal diagnosis.
ET – embryo transfer – is a step in the process of assisted reproduction in which embryos are placed into the uterus of a female with the intent to establish a pregnancy.
FET – frozen embryo transfer -is thawing one or more embryos (frozen during a previous treatment cycle) and transferring that embryo (or embryos) to the uterus in order to try to establish a pregnancy.
ED – egg donation – is the process by which a woman donates eggs for purposes of in vitro fertilization with the eggs being fertilized in the laboratory.
